What to know before tubing Florida’s Rainbow River

A limited number of tubes are available for rent each day

The state of Florida is known for several things. The most known are Disney World and the home of Mickey Mouse, a wide selection of theme parks, great beaches, oranges, the famous city of Miami. Besides all these, the state has much more to offer to its visitors and locals. As we visited this beautiful state, one of its hidden little gems is the Rainbow River.

Getting ready to jump in the water

The Rainbow River is in the town of Dunnellon, about 20 miles southwest of the city of Ocala and about 100 northwest from Orlando or north from Tampa. the Rainbow River is a must visit if you want to get away from the highways and the crowds that you will typically find at any of the mentioned above.

Let the adventure begin!

With its slow flow and cool temperature crystal-clear water, the almost 6-mile-long Rainbow River is surely to please anyone wanting to refresh and relax either on a tubing, boating, kayaking and even paddle boarding experience.

It took us two attempts to be able to enjoy the almost four-hour tubing down the Rainbow River. The first time, we learned that arriving there early was a must. Due to the time it takes to tube its length from beginning to end, the limited number of tubes available each day runs out by 10:00 am. Another important factor is the limited parking space, so make sure you arrive early if you do not want to be disappointed.

People beginning their Rainbow River adventure

Returning a few days later, we had successfully arrived there early enough to secure a parking spot and tickets for the adventure. Tubing down the Rainbow River will set you back $ 25 dollars per person. The price includes the entry fee, parking, tube rental, a return shuttle service to the starting point, and all taxes included as well.

We will never know if that was a real or fake crocodile taking the sun

On the day we tubed down the Rainbow River, the current was a bit faster than usual and made our entire journey safely in a little over three hours. We loved the calm and beautiful scenery with plenty of wildlife, vegetation, along with the view of homes of the lucky ones who can afford to live by the river.

Rainbow River is a great place for kayaking

We must admit that it was a great experience tubing down the Rainbow River during a hot summer day this past June and if we had to do it again, we surely would, perhaps in a kayak or a paddle board.

Cool and crystal waters

If you plan to enjoy the Rainbow River, make sure you arrive early, preferably before 10:00 am to avoid any issues. Don’t forget to take your own towel, which you can leave in your car or store for an additional fee in the lockers by the restrooms. If you like to take pictures or videos, a good phone should be sufficient. Take any personal belongings in a dry-bag. If you live in Florida or just want to enjoy this adventure more than once, it is a good idea to buy your own single tube here or a double one here. A life jacket is also a great idea to have with you.

Have fun!
