Whether you’re looking to explore the beaches of Cancun, the colonial towns of Oaxaca, or the bustling Mexico City, traveling by bus is an excellent way to see it all. Based on our experience while traveling in Mexico in December 2022, here are our best recommendations and tips to travel by bus within this huge country.

Many choices of transportation are available in Mexico

One of the great advantages of traveling by bus in Mexico is the variety of bus companies and routes available. Mexico has a well-established network of bus companies that provide both local and long-distance services. These buses are clean, comfortable, and affordable, making them an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers.

As avid travelers, we would like to emphasize that traveling within México by bus is safe. We had no problems taking local transportation or buses, and there shouldn’t be a reason why you should fear or avoid it. In fact, we believe that by taking buses it’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and return home with invaluable lessons that you will treasure for life.

One of the most popular bus companies in Mexico is ADO. This company has an extensive network of routes that connect cities and towns across the country. They offer a range of services, from local buses to luxury coaches, depending on your budget and travel needs. ADO’s buses are well-maintained, with comfortable seats, air conditioning, and often include amenities like Wi-Fi and a restroom.

When traveling by bus within Mexico you have several options, such as Economy, First-Class, and Executive. We highly recommend that if you are traveling more than 5 hours and particularly over night, to choose either the First-Class or the Executive. Keep in mind that the bus will be your bed and having a good rest while traveling should be your priority. You will be glad you did.

Another popular bus company in Mexico is Primera Plus. This company offers luxury coaches with amenities like individual screens for each seat, and reclining seats. These buses are perfect for long-distance trips and provide a level of comfort that is hard to find on other forms of transportation.

Traveling by bus in Mexico is also an excellent way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Bus stations are often located in the heart of the city, making it easy to explore local markets, restaurants, and shops. The buses themselves are also a great way to meet locals and other travelers. Mexicans are known for their hospitality and friendliness, and you’re sure to make some new friends on your journey.

On our first trip from Ciudad de México (CDMX) to the city of Taxco, we decided to take ADO. Our experience was good, although the the A/C could have been better. The trip was about 2.5 hours, and we were able to get some sleep along the way.

The best part when traveling by bus is that unlike most airlines nowadays, you are allowed to take with you usually two large pieces of luggage at no extra cost. Perhaps the second best part is that you can reach any of the bus stations by public transportation if you are traveling light, or by taxi or Uber. We were traveling with one large suitcase and our small personal bags, so we chose to take the second option, as it was faster and not super expensive. Most of our taxi or Uber rides were less than $ 5 USD. For our convenience, we decided that taking our buses from Terminal Central Del Sur, known as Taxqueña would be the best option based on our location.

Of course, when traveling by bus in México, you will usually have more than one option to travel by bus. Another very good bus line to travel to several other parts of 🇲🇽 is ETN Turistar. Online, you will read different opinions about these companies, but for us timing is a priority. It is up to each individual traveler.

If buying tickets online is something you fear, particularly on foreign websites, then you have different options to buy yours. You can buy tickets directly at the bus station Taxqueña, Tapo, Central del Norte, or at an OXXO convenience store. Additionally can be purchased at third-party sites, such as ClickBus for an additional small service fee.

The cost of traveling by bus in Mexico is also very reasonable. For example, a one-way ticket from Mexico City to Oaxaca can cost as little as $20 USD. Prices vary depending on the company and the level of service you choose, but even the most luxurious buses are significantly cheaper than flying or taking a private car. On our second leg of traveling by bus, we returned to CDMX with Costa Line and then after two days in the capital, we traveled to Puebla.

Another advantage of traveling by bus in Mexico is the flexibility it offers. With so many bus routes and companies to choose from, you can easily change your itinerary as you go. If you spend more time in a particular city or want to explore a new destination, you can simply hop on a bus and go. This flexibility makes traveling by bus in Mexico a great option for those who like to take their time and explore at their own pace.

Of course, like any mode of transportation, there are some things to keep in mind when traveling by bus in Mexico. One thing to be aware of is the language barrier. While many Mexicans speak English, especially in tourist areas, it’s always a good idea to have some basic Spanish phrases under your belt. This will help you communicate with bus drivers and locals, and make your trip more enjoyable. See our Spanish-language learning tips on our Cancun article here.

Another thing to keep in mind is safety. While Mexico has a reputation for being dangerous, the reality is that most of the country is safe for tourists. That being said, it’s always important to take precautions when traveling in a foreign country. Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid traveling alone at night, and be aware of your surroundings. If you’re unsure about the safety of a particular area, ask locals or your hotel staff for advice.
