Chinese Muslim Food

WechatIMG49Mr. Wang Ming showing his master skills at making fresh noodles at his restaurant

The first day that I arrived in China, once settled at the hotel, one of my work colleagues had commented that he had discovered a great local place to eat and so on our way we went. After walking a couple of blocks, we had arrived. The shop was quite small, but cozy and the smell was just awesome.

I felt very welcome at the restaurant from the moment I stepped in it. The small wooden stools had made me feel as though at a small local restaurant in some small town in my own country in South America. Once we sat down, with our group’s extremely limited Chinese skills we had managed to order a few things in the menu; it had been my very first encounter with Chinese culture and the language.

While our food was being prepared, I was told that the restaurant was operated by a Chinese Muslim family from the west of the country and that there were several of these restaurants in town. I remember clearly that on that first occasion, I had ordered a bowl of noodles on beef soup, which I had noticed some of the customers were eating on another table. Once we had ordered our food, the cook had begun right away to make by hand the noodles for our dishes, all by hand, on the spot only a couple of meters while we watched him do his job with an amazing agility. I had never been at a restaurant like this in my life. I was hooked from that very first day with this delicious food.

For the past three years I have lived in China, it has been almost a ritual to return to a Chinese Muslim restaurant during lunch time or during the weekends. About a year ago, I was informed by a colleague from Jamaica of a new Chinese Muslim restaurant near our work place. We went there for lunch during work and that had been it for me. The location, only a couple of blocks away and the welcoming family operating the restaurant had made me feel right at home.

After returning there many times, I also took my kids who visited me in China last year. They had loved the food so much that almost each time when I asked them what they wanted to eat, their answer was “Chinese Muslim food please”. I was quite happy of taking them there because I also enjoyed the food and very much how welcomed I felt at the restaurant. One year later, yesterday, as my kids arrived from South America to China, I once again asked them the same questions and the answer was almost instant “Chinese Muslim food”.

Today, after planning to go to a Japanese sushi restaurant and finding it was closed, the choice of lunch was obvious; we had returned again to our favorite restaurant. After all this time, I decided to ask for a few pictures and a video (I will upload it later) to write this blog. Mr. Wang Ming and Mrs. Ma Yulan in their mid-thirties from Haidong District in the Qinghai Province once more welcomed us with their typical smile, great service and delicious food. As long as I live in this town, I will be loyal customer at their restaurant.
