When we arrived in the mountainous city of Dalat in Southern Vietnam, we knew the area was famous for its coffee growing plantations; so we decided to immerse ourselves as much as possible in the growing and preparing process of the wonderful coffee beans.
As seasoned travelers and bloggers, we have made our mission to look for unique things to do and learn when traveling, thus being able to write well-informed articles on our page. In the city of Dalat, one of them was coffee, its culture within the region, and the country.
When you visit any city in Vietnam, you will see that almost everywhere you go, there are small coffee shops selling the typical cheap Cà Phê Sữa Đá, a shot of cold-brewed coffee mixed with a generous amount of condensed milk over ice. Truly, you must try Cà Phê Sữa Đá if you are in Vietnam, as if made just right, you will definitely get hooked on it during your stay.
Without a doubt, there are innumerable types of coffee drinks that are enjoyed by millions around the world each day. Here in Dalat, as all over Vietnam, coffee drinking is a culture and art for many. Of course, you will see the usual drinkers that just enjoy a cheap cup, like everywhere else, but we noticed that in Dalat, like nowhere else in the country, there is a group of people that are very serious, and we wanted to learn a little about it.
On our search, during our first week in Dalat, we visited the coffee farm of Sơn Pacamara on the outskirts of the city, where we learned the basics of their coffee-growing business, varieties of beans grown on their lands and later we visited one of their coffee shops nearby. It was a great experience to learn some of the many details that are involved in the making of a cup of coffee. The mountainous and high-altitude region of Dalat, along with the soil quality makes it a great place for coffee plantations, particularly for Arabica beans.
If you find yourself in Dalat, we highly recommend that you take a coffee tour with Sơn Pacamara if you are in town, as it is a coffee farm as it should be and not one of the fancy and touristy looking farms. When you get there ask for Lin and tell her we sent you; she is very knowledgeable about coffee.
Days later, while walking in a morning search for breakfast very near our homestay, we noticed a small home front filled with people enjoying their morning coffee drink in an environment like no other we had seen in Vietnam. The small, but cozy packed environment was S Coffee Roastery.
We felt very attracted to enter this simple yet very comfortable coffee shop to enjoy our morning brew. With a big smile, we met Dung (pronounced Yong), an enthusiastic and energetic 35-year-old guy that within seconds of ordering your Cà Phê Sữa Đá, you will have it at your table ready to enjoy. We were hooked, S Coffee Roastery would be our regular spot during our stay in Dalat.
At this location, you can also enjoy other specialty made coffees, such as latte, Moka pot, espresso, drip coffee (among others) that you can enjoy with a freshly made croissant, cake, or cookies delivered daily from Petit Bon Bon Cake & Coffee, a local, somewhat hidden and very cozy bakery owned by Dung’s wife, Phuong, another young entrepreneur from Saigon, who decided years ago to move to Dalat and start her own business. We had the opportunity of visiting Petit Bon Bon Cake & Coffee and we loved the environment and their apple pie was delicious; this is also a place we highly recommend visiting while in Dalat.
During our second visit to S Coffee Roastery, we had the opportunity to meet Si~ (pronounced Sih) and Dung’s younger brother. Now, this guy is the one you want to talk to if you are interested in learning or talking about anything related to coffee types, the process of elaboration, roasting, and brewing techniques. Si~ speaks very good English and we are sure you can exchange many interesting stories with him, just as we did.
Si~ and his brother Dung, natives from the Quảng Trị Province in central Vietnam moved many years ago to Dalat and became well known among locals for their coffee knowledge and coffee shop. These two young brothers and entrepreneurs were a real pleasure to meet and learn about the coffee culture in Vietnam.
Si~ is the expert in coffee knowledge and Dung is the barista at S Coffee Roastery during their operation hours of 7:00 am to 11:00 am. You can also find Dung in the evenings serving Cà Phê Sữa Đá near the Dalat market (from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, except Mondays) from his mobile coffee shop called Bui Dalat, mounted on his motorcycle. If you are the kind of person that enjoys a cup of cold-brewed coffee in the evenings or just need a recharge, make sure you stop by and sit on the stairs, while enjoying the scenery of people, cars, and motorcycles passing by as the center area of Dalat becomes alive each evening.
One thing that perhaps we would like to let you know is that during the times we have stopped at S Coffee and Roastery is that we have not seen one foreigner drinking coffee there, with the exception of a couple ordering from outside the fence to take home. We believe that in places like these are where you can really appreciate the culture of Vietnam, pick up a conversation with the locals, make new friends and perhaps even learn a little Vietnamese pronunciation, which definitely is something you must practice many times before actually getting it.
Travel experiences like these are what motivate and drive us to continue traveling around the world. It is special moments like these when we meet great people like Si~ and Dung that we are grateful for the many treasurable and priceless moments in life that can only be achieved through traveling.

La cultura del café en Dalat, Vietnam

Cuando llegamos a la montañosa ciudad de Dalat, en el centro sur de Vietnam, sabíamos que el área era famosa por sus plantaciones de café; Por lo tanto, decidimos sumergirnos lo más posible en el proceso de cultivo y preparación de los maravillosos granos de esta bebida mundialmente famosa.
Como experimentados viajeros y blogueros, hemos hecho nuestra misión de buscar cosas únicas que hacer y aprender cuando viajamos, pudiendo así escribir artículos bien informados en esta página. En la ciudad de Dalat, una de ellas es el café, su cultura dentro de la región y a lo largo de este país asiático.
Cuando visite cualquier ciudad de Vietnam, verá que casi en todos lados, hay pequeñas cafeterías que venden el típico y barato Cà Phê Sữa Đá, un trago de café preparado en frío mezclado con una generosa cantidad de leche condensada sobre hielo. Sin duda, debe probar un Cà Phê Sữa Đá si visitas Vietnam, ya que, si está bien hecho, definitivamente se enganchará de esta bebida local durante su estadía.
Sin lugar a duda, hay innumerables tipos de bebidas derivadas del café que son disfrutadas cada día por millones de personas en todo el mundo. Aquí en Dalat, como en todo Vietnam, beber café es una cultura y también es un arte para muchos. Por supuesto, verá a los bebedores habituales que simplemente disfrutan de una taza barata como en cualquier otro lugar, pero notamos que aquí, como en ningún otro lugar del país, hay un grupo de personas que lo toman muy en serio, y queríamos aprender un poco al respecto.
En nuestra búsqueda, durante nuestra primera semana en Dalat, visitamos la finca cafetalera de Sơn Pacamara en las afueras de la ciudad, donde aprendimos los conceptos básicos de su negocio cafetero, variedades de cafés cultivados en sus tierras y luego visitamos una de sus cafeterías cercanas. Fue una gran experiencia aprender algunos de los muchos detalles involucrados en la preparación de una taza de café. La región montañosa y de gran altitud de Dalat, junto con la calidad del suelo, lo convierten en un excelente lugar para los cafetales, particularmente para los granos de Arábica.
Si visita Dalat, le recomendamos que haga un tour del café con Sơn Pacamara, ya que es una granja de café como debería ser y no una de las fincas de aspecto elegante y turístico. Cuando llegues allí pregunta por Lin y dile que te enviamos; ella está muy bien informada sobre el cultivo y el proceso del café en la región.
Días después, mientras caminabamos en busca de un desayuno matutino muy cerca de nuestro hostal, notamos un pequeño hogar lleno de gente que disfrutaba de su café mañanero en un ambiente como ningún otro que habíamos visto en Vietnam. El ambiente pequeño pero acogedor era S Coffee Roastery.
Nos sentimos muy atraídos por entrar en esta cafetería simple pero muy cómoda para disfrutar de un café. Con una gran sonrisa, conocimos a Dung (pronunciado Yong), un hombre muy entusiasta y enérgico de 35 años que en cuestión de segundos después de ordenar su Cà Phê Sữa Đá, lo tendrá en su mesa listo para disfrutar. Estábamos enganchados, S Coffee Roastery sería nuestro lugar habitual durante nuestra estancia en Dalat. En este lugar, también puede disfrutar de otros cafés especiales, como café con leche, Moka pot, café exprés y café de goteo (entre otros), que puede disfrutar con un cruasán recién hecho, un pastel o galletas entregados diariamente desde Petit Bon Bon, un panadería local, algo escondida y muy acogedora, propiedad de la esposa de Dung, Phuong, otra joven empresaria de Saigón, que decidió hace años mudarse a Dalat y comenzar su propio negocio. Tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar Petit Bon Bon y nos encantó su ambiente y su tarta de manzana estaba deliciosa; sin duda un lugar altamente recomendable.
Durante nuestra segunda visita al S Coffee Roastery, tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer a Si ~ (pronunciado Sih), el hermano menor de Dung. Este es el hombre con quien quieres hablar si estás interesado en aprender sobre cualquier cosa relacionada con los tipos de café, el proceso de elaboración, el tostado y las técnicas de preparación. Si ~ habla muy bien el inglés y estamos seguros de que puedes intercambiar muchas historias interesantes con él, tal como lo hicimos nosotros.
Si ~ y su hermano Dung, nativos de la provincia de Quảng Trị en el centro de Vietnam, se mudaron hace muchos años a Dalat y se hicieron muy conocidos entre los lugareños por su conocimiento de los granos y su pequeña cafetería. Fue un verdadero placer conocer y aprender de estos dos jóvenes hermanos y empresarios sobre la cultura del café en Vietnam.
Si ~ es el experto en conocimiento del café y Dung es el barista en S Coffee Roastery durante sus horas de operación de 7:00 a.m. a 11:00 a.m. También puede encontrar a Dung por las noches sirviendo Cà Phê Sữa Đá cerca del mercado Dalat (de 6:00 p.m. a 10:00 p.m., excepto los lunes) en su cafetería móvil llamada Bui Dalat, montada en su motocicleta. Si eres el tipo de persona que disfruta de una taza de café preparado en frío por las noches, asegúrese de pasar y sentarte en las escaleras, mientras disfrutas de la multitud de personas, automóviles y motocicletas que pasan por el área central de Dalat, cobrando vida cada noche.
Una cosa que nos gustaría hacerle saber es que en las varias ocasiones que fuimos a S Coffee and Roastery es que no vimos a un solo extranjero tomando café allí, con la excepción de uno que ordenó desde fuera de la cerca para llevar a casa. Creemos que en lugares como estos es donde realmente se puede apreciar la cultura de Vietnam. Este lugar fue perfecto para entablar conversaciones con los lugareños, hacer nuevos amigos e incluso aprender un poco de pronunciación vietnamita, que definitivamente es algo que hay practicar muchas veces.
Las experiencias de viaje como estas son las que nos motivan y nos impulsan a seguir viajando por el mundo. En momentos especiales como estos, cuando conocemos a grandes personas como Si ~ y Dung, estamos agradecidos por los muchos momentos de la vida que no tienen precio y que solo se pueden lograr viajando.
