On a recent trip with my girlfriend to India during Christmas and New Year’s break, we had the opportunity to learn about a small organization in the city of New Delhi called Providing Education To Everyone (PETE). This little NGO has been operating in the poorest and in most in need areas in the Kathputli Colony of the Indian capital since 2009.
PETE was founded with two goals in mind, to establish a school system and teach children the basic principles of reading, writing, and arithmetic; thus guiding enlightening students to understand that education is power and one of the most important tools to succeed in life.
The organization’s small school located in the center of the Kathputli Colony currently offers enough space to help about 40 students and it also provides clothing, games, notebooks and free education for them by local teachers employed from the same community. PETE also offers care for children aged 2-5 years old, providing them meals, while their parents are working.
Once our walk through the Kathputli Colony had been scheduled with PETE, on the day arranged, we met with our guide at exit 5 of the Shadipur station around 10:30 am. Once we had briefly introduced ourselves, we began walking through the street with a stop at the Kali Mata Mandir Hindu Temple and then on to the Kathputli Colony (also known as the puppet colony), the home to almost 3,000 families, many who live in direst conditions.
Once in the neighborhood, we visited a local clothing manufacturing shop, where many employees worked intensively making shirts to meet their minimum daily quotas of production. We all had the chance to look at their work and it seemed complicated and meticulous, all to meet the specifications of the desired quality. After about 10 minutes there, we had left the shop. We headed through the colony, which seemed a normal neighborhood of hard-working people. People selling vegetables, fruits, and almost anything necessary, as well as small shops, stalls of prepared street food ready to eat, such as samosas, my favorites.
We had walked through the area a while and many children were doing what they do best; play and have fun with their friends. Some of them were playing football in empty fields of land, while others just ran and seemed to enjoy their childhood without a care in the world and I was happy for them, because of no matter what, that is what children should do. We had taken several pictures of some of them that once they had seen us, they seemed very interested in getting a selfie with us or just getting photographed. We could see how happy this simple gesture made them and it made the walk so much more enjoyable.
Our guide had asked us to buy some apples for the little ones we would visit at the school, so we bought a few kilos. The organization strives to promote healthy eating and instead of giving them candies a fruit would be much more beneficial for them.
We had walked to through the bare ground of a small school where many children played football and just ran around on that Wednesday, the first day of January 2020. We had taken more photos of them and then we were guided into the building to the second floor to meet the group of about 20 little children between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, all sitting down on a thin carpet on the floor in front of a small area where their teacher took care of them, held classes and a little area in front of them, another adult was preparing their lunch for that day. All very attentive, as they saw us arrive, greeted us very joyously saying “hello”. It was a great feeling being there in front of them and seeing their little curious faces look at us as though waiting for instructions; they all looked very cute in their own individual way with their little coats and hats to stay warm.
The teacher quickly washed the apples we had bought for them, cut them in fourths and had the younger visitor from Germany to distribute them to the little ones who seemed very enthusiastic about getting a slice of apple and once they had it on their hands, most of them quickly began to eat it. It was great to see that these little kids were well taken care of by the adults present there.
When the teacher began to give them instructions about some songs they had learned in English, they all began to sing with their best English. We all just sat there taking pictures and videos of these little ones and felt happy to see that they shared their English skills with us and that they looked legitimately well. While we were there, we had the opportunity to give the teacher a donation of about 100 pencils and erasers for her to distribute to her students as she felt necessary for these children to keep learning. After about 40 minutes, we left the school while all the children loudly said “bye” to us. I think all of us felt good after spending time with them. It is our hope that they all grow up to be great people and that through PETE they can reach their full potential when they reach adulthood.

Ayudando a niños en las zonas más necesitadas de Nueva Delhi, India
En un reciente viaje con mi novia a la India durante las vacaciones de Navidad y Año Nuevo, tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer una pequeña organización en la ciudad de Nueva Delhi llamada Providing Education To Everyone (PETE). Esta pequeña ONG ha estado operando en las zonas más pobres y necesitadas de la colonia Kathputli de la capital india desde el año 2009.
PETE se fundó con dos objetivos en mente: establecer un sistema escolar y enseñar a los niños los principios básicos de lectura, escritura y aritmética; guiando así a los estudiantes para que entiendan que la educación es poder y una de las herramientas más importantes para tener éxito en la vida.
La pequeña escuela de la organización ubicada en el centro de la Colonia Kathputli actualmente ofrece suficiente espacio para ayudar a unos 40 estudiantes y también les proporciona ropa, juegos, cuadernos y educación gratuita por parte de maestros locales de la misma comunidad. PETE también ofrece atención a niños de 2 a 5 años de edad, proporcionándoles comidas mientras sus padres trabajan.

Habíamos caminado por el área un rato y muchos niños estaban haciendo lo que mejor saben hacer; jugar y divertirse con sus amigos. Algunos de ellos jugaban al fútbol en campos de tierra vacíos, mientras que otros simplemente corrían y parecían disfrutar de su infancia sin preocuparse del mundo y nos agradaba verlos felices disfrutando de su niñez. Habíamos tomado varias fotos de algunos de ellos que una vez que nos vieron, parecían muy interesados en tomarse una foto con nosotros o simplemente ser fotografiados. Pudimos ver cuán felices los hacia este simple gesto, haciendo la caminata mucho más agradable.
Nuestro guía nos pidió que compráramos algunas manzanas para los pequeños que visitaríamos en la escuela, así que compramos algunos kilos. La organización PETE se esfuerza por promover una alimentación saludable para los jóvenes y, en lugar de darles dulces, una fruta les sería mucho más beneficiosa para ellos.

Todos los pequeños estaban muy atentos, cuando nos vieron llegar, nos saludaron muy alegremente diciendo “Hello” en inglés. Fue una gran sensación estar allí frente a ellos y ver sus caritas curiosas mirándonos, así como esperando instrucciones; todos se veían muy lindos a su manera individual con sus pequeños abrigos y gorritos para mantenerse abrigados en ese día frio.
La maestra rápidamente lavó las manzanas que les habíamos comprado, las cortó en cuartos y pidió al visitante más joven de nuestro grupo de procedencia alemana que las distribuyera a los pequeños que parecían muy entusiasmados por comerse una rodaja de las frutas y una vez que la tenían en sus pequeñas manos, la mayoría de ellos rápidamente comenzaron a comérselas. Fue genial ver que estos niños pequeños parecían estar bien atendidos por los adultos presentes.
Cuando la maestra comenzó a darles instrucciones sobre algunas canciones que habían aprendido en inglés, todos comenzaron a cantar. Los visitantes nos sentamos en frente de ellos, tomando fotos y videos de estos pequeños y nos sentimos felices de ver que compartían sus habilidades en inglés con nosotros y que se veían legítimamente bien cuidados en un programa educacional decente. Mientras estuvimos allí, tuvimos la oportunidad de donarle a la maestra unos 100 lápices y borradores para que los distribuyera a sus alumnos para que estos niños siguieran aprendiendo. despues de unos 40 minutos, salimos de la pequeña sala, mientras todos los niños nos decían “Bye” en voz alta. Creo que todos los visitantes a aquella escuela nos sentimos muy bien después de pasar un rato con ellos. Es nuestra esperanza que todos crezcan para ser grandes personas y que a través de organización PETE puedan alcanzar su máximo potencial cuando lleguen a la edad adulta.
