Perhaps you have heard many times that the most beautiful things about humans are inside each one of us, but the reality is that now days not many of us live by this rule and our first impressions about others are usually based on their looks and the shapes of their bodies.
At the end of December 2019, during our trip to India, the country that for a reason I cannot exactly remember since when I had a fascination to visit, explore and learn about its rich culture, it finally became a reality. During this trip, the schedule which had been meticulously created by Leollyne, my girlfriend over a period of several months, the final stop would be the city of Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal, about 4 hours by car from New Delhi.
We wanted our last experience in India to be magnificent and we were certain that the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world would provide us just that. Little did we know that in that city we would find something even more impressive than the ancient structure; in the city of Agra, we would find a place that would teach us a lesson that we wouldn’t forget for the rest of our lives. There we would witness an eye-opening lesson of what true human beauty and spirit are all about.
Through some research for what would be a one-day visit to the city of Agra, we had learned about this unique café and restaurant called Sheroes hangout. This place was not like all the places we had enjoyed our meals in India; the place had called our attention from the moment we had learned about it. We were determined, we had to go there and see what it was all about; it would be a once in a lifetime experience.
Although the long history of acid attacks throughout the world, since the early part of the year 2000 or perhaps earlier, acid attacks in India began to be part of the news headlines as it gained popularity in that country as a common way of vengeance from one person to another, particularly from men towards women. For a variety of reasons, these attacks were and still are being used among many with the intention to disfigure, torture or even kill; the most common being envy or jealousy towards a family member, friend, gender discrimination or towards someone who refuses another’s love proposal. Acid attacks are not only a growing problem in India but also in many countries in South Asia, as far as in England there have been reports of such attacks. According to reports and survivor advocates, every year the numbers of acid attacks in India alone are estimated to be up to 1,000, and only about 300 of them are reported to the authorities. India is the country with the highest number of acid attacks in the world.
As we researched the Sheroes Hangout Café, we knew what we were up to. We had planned to go for dinner there on the day we were scheduled to arrive in Agra, and we would meet in person some of the survivors of acid attacks that were employed there. Sheroes Hangout’s mission and vision are to provide a safe space for these survivors and to help them regain the strength needed to continue believing in themselves, help them trying to live a normal life and help fight against the social stigma surrounding victims of acid attacks in India.
We had entered the café on that evening and after taking a seat on our own, we had not seen anyone as all must have been in the kitchen, but only a few minutes later, Rukaiya had approached our table and welcomed us. Once I looked at her face, I felt a cold chill in my body while quickly thinking of her suffering. How could someone do such a horrific thing to another human? I thought to myself before answering her questions just seconds earlier saying “hello my name is Rukaiya welcome to Sheroes Hangout” and with a smile, she handed us the menus.
What had been only a few seconds and my brain tried to comprehend so many things about the woman standing right next to us, quickly all those thoughts had somehow vanished as within her disfigured face I could see a warm and genuine smile and we could also sense her happiness of being there, irradiating positive energy all around her.
Moments later, we had made our choice from their menu without prices. Rukaiya had taken our order and quickly walked away towards the kitchen. As our waiter had left, Leollyne and I began talking about the place, their suffering and how difficult it must be to keep on living after such an incident. While we were looking around the establishment, all of a sudden we began seeing more women acid survivors emerging from the kitchen; all seemed very much occupied with their labors and cherished to be there. At first, I have to say it was a bit confusing seeing them all so contempt, and that had made me feel wanting to talk to at least one of them.
When Rukaiya approached our table to bring our food, which by the way it was delicious, I built some courage and asked for her supervisor for permission for a brief interview to which he approached moments later and had agreed for after our meal. During our dinner at Sheroes, in my mind, I tried to find the right questions to ask the supervisor and at least one of the victims. The manager had chosen Rukaiya to answer my questions. I had felt the urge to have a one to one conversation with a victim, I wanted to have an idea what it was like to be one of them. After our meal, I had briefly talked to Mr. Ashish Shukla, the main campaigner for Stop Acid Attacks and one of the men behind the idea of creating the Sheroes Hangout; then a few questions with Rukaiya through an interpreter. After a brief introduction, Rukaiya Khantoon began telling her story and as I listened, I began to feel this inexplicable sensation and a knot on my throat began to form as though almost unable to speak, but trying to keep my composure.
Rukaiya began telling her very moving story of how she had been attacked in 2002 when she was only 14 years old because she had rejected her bother in law’s younger brother’s advances and a marriage proposal. The attacker then 6 years older than Rukaiya had insisted on the idea, but she and her family had turned him down. Out of frustration and anger, the man had purchased acid in a container and had thrown it at her face while sitting in a courtyard. Listening to Rukaiya tell her story was difficult to grasp the idea of such a horrendous crime, but more impressive was to see her courage to share it with strangers like us. I could almost feel my eyes getting watery, while Leollyne who was recording had busted in tears and after the interview, while hugging Rukaiya who was very calm and in reply had said to her “don’t cry, I am happy now. I have a 7-year-old child and I am happily married”
After the short interview, the answer was clear. Rukaiya and all those women working at Sheroes Café had one thing in common; they had learned to love themselves and life more than anything. After their attacks, they had built the courage to face and continue their life again to share their incredible stories with anyone who was willing to listen. In my life, I have met very strong women who have faced many struggles and continued on with their lives, but these acid attack survivors were different. Each of their visible scars tells an incredible story on their own and their words are the testimony of survival, determination, strength, and courage. These acid victims and survivors know that their scars on the faces and bodies do not determine who they are because each one of them is far beyond most of us; they know that true human beauty is within each one of us and they are living proof of it each day of their lives.
La verdadera belleza está dentro de nosotros
Tal vez haya escuchado muchas veces que las cosas más bellas de los humanos están dentro de cada uno de nosotros, pero la realidad es que hoy en día no muchos de nosotros vivimos de acuerdo con esta idea y nuestras primeras impresiones sobre otras personas generalmente se basan en las apariencias físicas.
A fines de diciembre de 2019, durante nuestro viaje a la India, el país que por una razón que no puedo recordar exactamente cuando me empezó la fascinación de visitarlo, explorar y aprender sobre su rica cultura, finalmente se hizo una realidad muchos años después. Durante este viaje, en el itinerario que Leollyne, mi novia, había creado meticulosamente durante varios meses, nuestra última parada sería la ciudad de Agra, el hogar del famoso Taj Mahal, a unas 4 horas en automóvil desde Nueva Delhi.
Queríamos que nuestra última experiencia en India fuera magnífica y estábamos seguros de que el Taj Mahal, una de las siete maravillas del mundo nos proporcionaría exactamente eso. Poco sabíamos que en esa ciudad encontraríamos algo aún más impresionante que la aclamada estructura; en la ciudad de Agra encontraríamos un lugar que nos enseñaría una lección que de seguro no olvidaremos por el resto de nuestras vidas. Seria en aquella ciudad donde presenciaríamos una lección reveladora de lo que realmente se trata la belleza y el espíritu humano.
A través de algunas investigaciones sobre lo que sería nuestra visita de un día a la ciudad de Agra, nos enteramos sobre un café y restaurante muy único llamado Sheroes Hangout. Este lugar no era como todos los lugares donde habíamos disfrutado nuestras comidas en India; este lugar había llamado nuestra atención desde el momento en que nos habíamos enterado de el. Después de convérsalo estábamos decididos, teníamos que ir allí y ver de qué se trataba; sería una experiencia única en la vida.
Aunque los ataques con acido tienen una larga historia en muchas partes alrededor del mundo, desde principios del año 2000 o tal vez antes, los ataques con ácido en la India comenzaron a ser parte de los titulares de las noticias, ya que había ganado popularidad en ese país como una forma común de venganza de una persona a otra, particularmente de hombres hacia mujeres. Por una variedad de razones, estos ataques fueron y siguen siendo utilizados entre muchos con la intención final de desfigurar, torturar o incluso matar; los motivos más comunes son la envidia o los celos hacia un familiar, amigo, discriminación de género o hacia alguien que rechaza la propuesta de amor de otro. Los ataques con ácido no solo son un problema creciente en la India, sino también en muchos países del sur de Asia, hasta en Inglaterra, se ha escuchado de tales ataques. Según los informes y los defensores de los sobrevivientes, cada año se estima que el número de ataques con ácido solo en India se acometen hacia unas 1,000 personas, y solo alrededor de 300 de estos son reportados a las autoridades. India es el país con el mayor número de ataques con ácido en el mundo.
Mientras investigábamos sobre el Sheroes Hangout Café, sabíamos lo que sucedería. Habíamos planeado ir a cenar allí el día en que teníamos previsto llegar a Agra, y que nos encontraríamos en persona con algunas de las sobrevivientes de los ataques con ácido que trabajan allí. La misión y visión de Sheroes Hangout es proporcionar un espacio seguro para estas sobrevivientes y ayudarlas a recuperar la fuerza necesaria para seguir creyendo en sí mismas, ayudarlos a tratar de vivir una vida normal y también a luchar contra el estigma social que rodea a las víctimas de ataques con ácido en India.
Cuando entramos a Sheroes Hangout esa tarde y después de tomar asiento por nuestra cuenta, no habíamos visto a nadie, ya que todos debían haber estado en la cocina, pero solo unos momentos después, una mujer llamada Rukaiya se había acercado a nuestra mesa. Una vez que miré su rostro, sentí un escalofrío en mi cuerpo mientras rápidamente pensaba en su sufrimiento. ¿Cómo podría alguien hacerle algo tan horrible a otro humano? Pensé para mí mismo antes de responder a sus preguntas solo unos segundos antes diciendo “hola, mi nombre es Rukaiya, bienvenidos a Sheroes Hangout” y, con una sonrisa, nos entregó los menús.
habían pasado solo unos segundos y mi cerebro trataba de comprender tantas cosas sobre la mujer parada junto ante nosotros. Rápidamente todos esos pensamientos se habían desvanecido de alguna manera ya que en su rostro desfigurado pude ver una sonrisa cálida y genuina e igualmente pudimos sentir su felicidad de estar allí, irradiando energía positiva a su alrededor. Para ella todo parecía estar bien; no había motivo para estar triste.
Momentos después, habíamos elegido los platillos para nuestra cena del menú sin precios. Rukaiya había tomado nuestro pedido y rápidamente se alejó hacia la cocina. Cuando nuestra camarera se había ido, Leollyne y yo comenzamos a hablar sobre el lugar, el sufrimiento y lo difícil que debía ser seguir viviendo después de tal incidente. Mientras estábamos mirando alrededor del establecimiento, de repente comenzamos a ver más mujeres sobrevivientes de ataques de ácido que salían de la cocina; todas parecían estar muy ocupadas con sus labores y parecían estar muy agradecidas de estar allí. Tengo que admitir que al principio de nuestra visita a Sheroes Hangout fue un poco confuso verlas a todas tan despreocupadas, esto haciéndome sentir ansias por hablar con al menos una de aquellas victimas.
Cuando Rukaiya se acercó a nuestra mesa para traer nuestra comida, que por cierto estaba deliciosa, me armé de valor y le pedí hablar con su supervisor para una breve entrevista, a la que se acercó momentos después a nuestra mesa y que había aceptado la propuesta para después de nuestra comida. Durante nuestra cena en Sheroes Hangout, en mi mente intenté encontrar las preguntas correctas para hacerle al supervisor y al menos a una de las víctimas de estos brutales ataques de acido. El supervisor había elegido a Rukaiya, nuestra mesera para responder mis preguntas. Quería tener una idea cómo era estar en los zapatos de una de ellas y poder contar la historia. Después de nuestra comida, hablé brevemente con el Sr. Ashish Shukla, uno de los principales activistas de Stop Acid Attacks y uno de los hombres detrás de la idea de crear el Sheroes Hangout; luego logré hacerle algunas preguntas a Rukaiya a través de un intérprete. Después de una breve introducción, Rukaiya Khantoon de la ciudad de Agra, India comenzó a contar su historia y, mientras la escuchaba, comencé a sentir una sensación inexplicable y un nudo en mi garganta comenzó a formarse que casi no me dejaba hablar, pero traté de mantener la compostura.
Rukaiya comenzó a contar su conmovedora historia de cómo había sido atacada en 2002 cuando tenía solo 14 años porque había rechazado los avances sentimentales y la propuesta de matrimonio del hermano menor de su yerno. El atacante entonces 6 años mayor que Rukaiya había insistido en la idea, pero ella y su familia lo habían rechazado. Por frustración y enojo, el hombre había comprado ácido en un recipiente y se lo había arrojado a la cara mientras estaba sentada en un patio. Escuchar a Rukaiya contar su historia fue difícil de comprender la idea de un crimen tan horrendo, pero más impresionante fue ver su coraje para compartirlo con extraños como nosotros. Casi podía sentir que mis ojos se ponían llorosos, mientras que Leollyne, que estaba grabando la entrevista y sacando fotos, no aguanto mas rompiendo en llanto y después de la entrevista, mientras abrazaba a Rukaiya, que estaba muy tranquila, le respondió: “No llores, estoy feliz ahora. Tengo un hijo de 7 años y estoy felizmente casada “.
Después de la breve entrevista, la respuesta era clara. Rukaiya y todas esas mujeres que trabajan en Sheroes Hangout tenían una cosa en común; ellas habían aprendido a amarse a sí mismas y mas que nada a sus vidas. Después de sus ataques, habían creado coraje para enfrentar, continuar sus vidas y para contar sus increíbles historias a cualquiera que estuviera dispuesto a escucharlas. En mi vida he conocido mujeres muy fuertes que han enfrentado muchas luchas y a pesar de todo continuaron con sus vidas, pero estas sobrevivientes de ataques con ácido fueron diferentes. Cada una de sus visibles cicatrices cuentan por si mismas una historia increíble y sus palabras ahora son el testimonio de supervivencia, determinación, fuerza y coraje. Estas víctimas saben que las cicatrices en sus caras y sus cuerpos no determinan su belleza; estas mujeres están mucho más adelantadas que la mayoría de todos nosotros. Ellas saben que la verdadera belleza humana está dentro de cada uno de nosotros y lo demuestran cada día de sus vidas.
