One of the best things China has to offer to anyone visiting the country is their delicious food. In this massive country, the choices of food are infinite. Soups and noodles of all kinds and flavors are just the beginning of the list, to which can be complemented with their huge variety of delicious vegetables prepared steamed, or sautéed. Out of all the magnificent dishes I have tried during my time in China, I have to say that my favorite has to be the Chinese steamed bun, in Chinese 小笼包 pronounced Xiao long bao.

I had tried xiao long bao when I arrived in China three years ago but then fell in love with them again after visiting a small restaurant in Shanghai called 麟笼坊 (pronounced lin long fang) located at No. 10 Jian Guo Dong Road. This place not only offers delicious xiao long bao, made right in front of your eyes by a group of nothing less than miracle workers, which never cease to impress with their dedication and skills making by hand each one of these succulent bite-sized pieces of heaven but also has a small menu to delight many.

The small restaurant that fills up with around 30 people, also specializes at making a delicious seaweed and egg soup (among others) also equally delicious dry noodles with fried scallions and a secret sauce and noodles with minced meat and spicy soup.

The word for the delicious steaming dish 小笼 (xiao long) derives from a kind of small bamboo steaming basket where each order is served with 12 of them. The soup filled in each xiao long bao is created by wrapping solid meat aspic (pork meat, pork, and vegetables or shrimp) inside the thin dough skin, which by the process of steaming then melts the gelatin-gelled aspic into a soup. To eat these little wonders takes a bit of skill as the boiling soup must be sucked out first by biting a small hole on the dough, to then making a bigger opening and dipping into a mix of hot sauce with vinegar or my favorite, a mix of ginger juice vinegar and hot sauce.

On the weekends (which it’s when we usually go there), these ladies work intensely to meet the demands of hungry customers eating at the establishment as well as for the constant deliveries sent away. If your Chinese skills are limited, one of the best things about Ling long fang restaurant is that if you ask for the menu (only one at the cashier at the moment you order and pay before you eat) they also have a copy in English and all you have to do is point at what you want.

So next time you are in Shanghai, make sure you stop at Lin long fang restaurant, a place that it is almost guaranteed to impress your taste buds and perhaps make you a regular customer like many.
