During the early days of February 2020 in the early stages of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we were very lucky to travel and be allowed to enter from Singapore into Vietnam through the International Airport of Da Nang and from there to Hoi An, our favorite town in this beautiful country. Only a couple of weeks later, Vietnam had closed its doors to the world as a measure to isolate, control, and prevent the spreading of the virus within its borders. Vietnam had been one of the first southeastern Asian countries to react quickly and smart enough to protect its citizens.
After visiting the small coastal town of Hoi An twice in 2019, we had fallen in love with this unique and wonderful place. If you were to ask us what is so special about Hoi An, the answer would be simple; it is the simplicity of the people living in the town and the amazing contrast that you will see between the beautiful beaches and touristy areas along the town’s coast and only a few kilometers away in the center of town, you will find yourself in the middle of beautiful green rice fields, people working the lands, herds of buffaloes, cows, and ducks while you walk or ride along with the innumerable number of trails, alleyways, and neighborhoods.
In Hoi An, Vietnam, you will also be able to enjoy the beautiful Old Town area, a UNESCO recognized ancient town dating back to the 15th century, then an important stop on the Silk Road and a popular place of trade in Asia. In this picturesque historic site of Hoi An, you can now walk and enjoy the many retail stores, bars, restaurants, and a huge selection of local coffee shops, where you can enjoy the locally known coconut coffee.
During our previous stays in Hoi An, we had decided to stay near the beach areas, but on this new occasion we wanted a different experience; we wanted to mingle a little more with the locals. After some research for the right place to stay, we had found one that looked promising; this place is called Lakeview Villa Homestay.
When we arrived at our new selected location, we were happy to be at the small homestay owned by Mr. Hau and Mrs. Nga. The very attentive couple with two young daughters, Tra (11) and My (7) was a great opportunity to spend time with the local people of Hoi An.
From the beginning, the small but cozy yellow homestay with only eight rooms made us feel at home. Our room was extremely clean, with a comfortable and nice pillow (we love their pillows) clean sheets and towels changed frequently and equipped with a small refrigerator, air conditioning, a closet with hangers, a private bathroom and a balcony offered all we needed. Lakeview Villa Homestay also offered us a separate shared kitchen to prepare your own meals and a nice swimming pool to enjoy at any time.
Our initial intentions were to stay in Hoi An for a couple of weeks, buy or rent a motorcycle and travel south through the coast into Da Lat then towards the Mekong river and from there head west to the little island of Phu Quoc and perhaps even further into Cambodia, Laos and beyond. Little did we know then that Lakeview Villa Homestay would be our home for the next three months during the pandemic of the coronavirus. Vietnam’s borders had been closed and we had nowhere to go; home was not an option. During those difficult times between the end of February and the end of the month of May, Lakeview Villa Homestay would be our home away from home.
Hoi An offers an array of lodging options, but we had already settled down and were very comfortable at our new home. The decent internet provided by the homestay had been perfect for our needs while working online each day from our computers under the shade and windy location of the straw hut by the swimming pool and the pond at the entrance of the premises. We would also cook our meals each day in the shared kitchen. In the evenings we would go for a quick ride to the local stores like VinMart, Moonmilk, or the Ba Le Market for our groceries, fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood.
Life during those three months at Lakeview Villa Homestay was very enjoyable and over time we had enjoyed a meal with Mr. Hau and his family, along with some pleasant conversations about a variety of topics, particularly about education with Mrs. Nga who is an English teacher at a local school.
While staying at Lakeview Villa Homestay we were able to learn more about this beautiful town, its people, and as well enjoy their food and hospitality. We had the chance to make popcorn and churros with the children of the homestay and with their help, we were able to pick up a few words in Vietnamese. Hoi An is one of those places that will forever stay in our minds and hearts and a place that we have contemplated the idea of settling down in the future. Perhaps we will return again.

Un pedacito de cielo en Hoi An, Vietnam
Durante los primeros días de febrero de 2020, en las primeras etapas de la pandemia de Coronavirus (COVID-19), tuvimos mucha suerte de viajar y se nos permitió ingresar desde Singapur a Vietnam a través del Aeropuerto Internacional de Da Nang y de allí a Hoi An, Nuestro pueblo favorito en este hermoso país. Solo un par de semanas después, Vietnam había cerrado sus puertas al mundo como una medida para aislar, controlar y prevenir la propagación del virus dentro de sus fronteras. Vietnam había sido uno de los primeros países del sudeste asiático en reaccionar lo suficientemente rápido e inteligente como para proteger a sus ciudadanos.
Después de visitar el pequeño pueblo costero de Hoi An dos veces en 2019, nos enamoramos de este lugar único y maravilloso. Si nos preguntara qué tiene de especial Hoi An, la respuesta sería simple; Es la simplicidad de las personas que viven en la ciudad y el sorprendente contraste que verá entre las hermosas playas y las zonas turísticas a lo largo de la costa de la ciudad y a solo unos pocos kilómetros de distancia en el centro de la ciudad, se encontrará en medio de hermosos campos de arroz verde, gente trabajando en las tierras, rebaños de búfalos, vacas y patos mientras caminas o andas por la innumerable cantidad de senderos, callejones y vecindarios.
En Hoi An, Vietnam, también podrá disfrutar de la hermosa zona del casco antiguo, una ciudad antigua reconocida por la UNESCO que data del siglo XV, luego una parada importante en la Ruta de la Seda y un popular lugar de comercio en Asia. Durante nuestras estadías anteriores en Hoi An, habíamos decidido quedarnos cerca de las áreas de playa, pero en esta nueva ocasión queríamos una experiencia diferente; Queríamos mezclarnos un poco más con los lugareños. Después de investigar un poco sobre el lugar adecuado para quedarse, encontramos uno que parecía prometedor; Este lugar se llama Lakeview Villa Homestay.
Cuando llegamos a nuestra nueva ubicación seleccionada, nos alegramos de estar en la pequeña casa de familia propiedad del Sr. Hau y la Sra. Nga. La pareja muy atenta con dos hijas jóvenes, Tra (11) y My (7) fue una gran oportunidad para pasar tiempo con la gente local de Hoi An.
Desde el principio, la pequeña pero acogedora casa de familia amarilla con solo ocho habitaciones nos hizo sentir como en casa. Nuestra habitación estaba extremadamente limpia, con una almohada cómoda y agradable (nos encantan sus almohadas). Las sábanas y toallas limpias se cambiaban con frecuencia y estaban equipadas con una pequeña nevera, aire acondicionado, un armario con perchas, un baño privado y un balcón con todo lo que necesitábamos. Lakeview Villa Homestay también nos ofreció una cocina compartida separada para preparar sus propias comidas y una bonita piscina para disfrutar en cualquier momento.
Nuestras intenciones iniciales eran permanecer en Hoi An por un par de semanas, comprar o alquilar una motocicleta y viajar hacia el sur a través de la costa hacia Da Lat, luego hacia el río Mekong y desde allí dirigirse hacia el oeste a la pequeña isla de Phu Quoc y quizás aún más en Camboya, Laos y más allá. Poco sabíamos entonces que Lakeview Villa Homestay sería nuestro hogar durante los próximos tres meses durante la pandemia del coronavirus. Las fronteras de Vietnam habían sido cerradas y no teníamos a dónde ir; El hogar no era una opción. Durante esos momentos difíciles entre finales de febrero y finales de mayo, Lakeview Villa Homestay sería nuestro hogar lejos de casa.
Hoi An ofrece una variedad de opciones de alojamiento, pero ya nos habíamos establecido y estábamos muy cómodos en nuestro nuevo hogar. El buen acceso a Internet proporcionado por la casa de familia había sido perfecto para nuestras necesidades mientras trabajábamos en línea todos los días desde nuestras computadoras bajo la sombra y la ubicación ventosa de la cabaña de paja junto a la piscina y el estanque en la entrada de las instalaciones. También cocinamos nuestras comidas todos los días en la cocina compartida. Por las noches íbamos a dar un paseo rápido a las tiendas locales como VinMart, Moonmilk o Ba Le Market para comprar comestibles, verduras frescas, frutas y mariscos.
La vida durante esos tres meses en Lakeview Villa Homestay fue muy agradable y con el tiempo disfrutamos de una comida con el Sr. Hau y su familia, junto con algunas conversaciones agradables sobre una variedad de temas, en particular sobre la educación con la Sra. Nga, que es inglesa Profesor en una escuela local.
Durante su estadía en Lakeview Villa Homestay pudimos aprender más sobre esta hermosa ciudad, su gente y también disfrutar de su comida y hospitalidad. Tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer palomitas de maíz y churros con los niños de la casa de familia y, con su ayuda, pudimos aprender algunas palabras en vietnamita. Hoi An es uno de esos lugares que permanecerá para siempre en nuestras mentes y corazones y un lugar en el que hemos contemplado la idea de establecernos en el futuro. Quizás volveremos de nuevo.
