Costa Rica was the second country I visited on my road backpacking trip from the Central American country of Panama to Houston, Texas during the summer of 2010. I arrived in this wonderful Central American country in the month of July of that year. Costa Rica was then the country most visited by tourists in that geographical area. Known for its beautiful beaches, resorts, volcanoes, and security in general, it was obvious because many people had chosen Costa Rica as a place to retire.

I had heard many times about the wonderful reserves of tropical rainforest in Costa Rica, something that interested me a lot. The country was then known as a paradise for people who wanted to enjoy outdoor activities. After arriving in the capital city of San Jose and spending a night there, I took a bus to the northwest of the country to the town of Monteverde.

Getting to this small tourist town by car would have taken me about three hours, but due to my budget, I had chosen to take the cheapest bus, and that had almost doubled the time. I had enjoyed the trip to the town of Monteverde through dirt roads and potholes, stopping an infinite number of times in each small town, rural road and even in places that seemed to be in the middle of nowhere; places where people came and went on dirt roads to their houses in the hills. The bus trip itself had been an adventure and a cultural experience.

Once he had reached Monteverde, I could breathe the pure mountain air. Apparently, the town had exploded in recent years with tourists from all around the world who came to enjoy beautiful walks through the cloud forests of the area. The area also offered many other attractions for visitors, such as zip-lining through the jungle, hiking, rafting on the nearby river, and even visits and adventure trips to the nearby Arenal Volcano. I was not there for any of those packaged deals. I just wanted to relax in the small town and go out alone to the cloud forest; It was the perfect opportunity to get lost and have time for myself and reflect on many things.

In Monteverde I had managed to stay in a cheap ecological hostel that had everything a backpacker could ever want; A comfortable bed to sleep in, everything else did not matter. Every night, for about $ 10 dollars for a bed in a shared room, bathrooms, and a collective kitchen. This place would be my home during my three days in the area.

During my short stay in Monteverde, I had the opportunity to take long walks every day. Every step I took through the jungle seemed to be a slow recovery process for my hectic life in the United States. Being outdoors only with nature, taking these photos of random trees, cows, and horses on the road, insects and some selfies are some reminders of my stay in this beautiful Central American country.

When it was time to leave Monteverde and Costa Rica, I could feel better and I had felt that the rest of the trip would be a success. I had another 5 countries where many other unknown adventures awaited me. Costa Rica is definitely a place I will return to in the future.

Monteverde, Costa Rica

Costa Rica fue el segundo país que visité en mi viaje con mochila en mano por carreteras desde el país centroamericano de Panamá a Houston, Texas durante el verano de 2010. Llegué a este maravilloso país centroamericano en el mes de julio de ese año. Costa Rica entonces era el país más visitado por turistas en esa área geográfica. Conocido por sus hermosas playas, centros turísticos, volcanes y seguridad en general, era obvio porque muchas personas habían elegido Costa Rica como lugar para retirarse.

Había escuchado muchas veces sobre las maravillosas reservas de selva tropical de Costa Rica, algo que me interesó mucho. El país conocido como el paraíso para las personas que quieren disfrutar de actividades al aire libre. Después de llegar a la ciudad capital de San José y pasar una noche allí, tomé un autobús al noroeste del país hacia el pueblo de Monteverde.

Llegar a este pequeño pueblo turístico en automóvil me habría llevado aproximadamente tres horas, pero debido a mi presupuesto, había elegido tomar el autobús más barato que demoraba aproximadamente 6 horas. Disfruté el viaje allí por caminos de tierra y baches, parando una cantidad infinita de veces en cada pueblo pequeño, camino rural e incluso en lugares que parecían estar en medio de la nada; lugares donde la gente entraba y salía por senderos de tierra hasta sus casas en las colinas. El viaje en autobús en sí había sido una experiencia cultural.

Una vez que había llegado a Monteverde, podía respirar el aire puro de las montañas. Aparentemente, el pueblo había explotado en los últimos años con turistas de todo el mundo que venían a disfrutar de hermosos paseos por los bosques nubosos de la zona. El área ofrecía muchas otras atracciones para los visitantes, tales como tirolesa a través de la selva, caminatas, rafting en el río cercano e incluso visitas y viajes de aventura al cercano Volcán Arenal. Yo no estaba allí para ninguna de esas. Solo quería relajarme en el pequeño pueblo y salir a caminar solo al bosque nublado; Fue la oportunidad perfecta para perderme y tener tiempo para mí mismo y reflexionar sobre muchas cosas.

En Monteverde logré alojarme en un hostal ecológico barato que tenía todo lo que un mochilero podría desear; Una cama cómoda para dormir, todo lo demás eran solo detalles. Cada noche, por unos $ 10 dólares por una cama en una habitación compartida, baños y una cocina colectiva, sería mi hogar durante mis tres días en el área.

Durante mi corta estadía en Monteverde, tuve la oportunidad de realizar largas caminatas cada día. Cada paso que daba a través de la selva parecía ser un proceso de recuperación lento para mi vida agitada en los Estados Unidos. Estar al aire libre en la naturaleza, tomar estas fotos de árboles al azar, vacas en el camino, insectos y algunos selfies son algunos recordatorios de mi estadía en este hermoso país centroamericano.

Cuando llegó el momento de dejar Monteverde y Costa Rica, ya podía sentirme mejor y presentía que el viaje sería un éxito. Me quedaban otros 5 países donde me esperaban muchas otras aventuras desconocidas. Costa Rica es definitivamente un lugar al que regresaré en el futuro.
