Cai Rang Floating Market is one of the places we have had in mind to visit since we first stepped into Vietnamese soil. Located in the Mekong Delta in the southern part of the country, this place is a must-visit.
Before even arriving in Vietnam, we had seen beautiful reports, pictures, and many travelers talking about this famous destination; we had literally fallen in love with what Vietnam had to offer long before traveling there. Rich ancient and modern history, great food, and welcoming people, Vietnam is a top destination that should be in every traveler’s bucket list.
Located about three and a half hours away by car from the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh, the town of Can Tho is the epicenter location to visit the floating market. Conveniently located about 15 to 30 minutes by boat (depending on the speed of the boat you take), the best hour to visit the Cai Rang Floating Market is between five or five-thirty in the morning.
Once you arrive in Can Tho, you will have plenty of options to get to the floating market. Make sure you do your research well in advance, as we have read many reviews of unfortunately bad experiences of many visitors regarding their tour operators. Remember that sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry, so if security is your top priority and you want to avoid bargaining or any problems, perhaps hiring a guided tour directly from your hotel or hostel is the best way for you.
Our more adventurous spirits guided us to read the reviews and trust those who had a good experience with Ms. Loan, a local and independent tour boat operator. We had a good experience with her as well and for that reason, we highly recommend her services.
Out of the various combinations offered along with the visit to the floating market (tours from 3 to up to 7 hours), we chose the package with a visit to the Sáu Hoài Rice Noodle Factory and a tour through the local canals, which the later was an experience and an eye-opener by itself which we will write about it on a separate article.
For the scheduled 3-hour tour, including an early motorcycle pick up from our hostel to the nearby edge of the Hau river (sông Hậu), we paid 500,000 Vietnamese Dong (about USD $22) for two people for a boat only for us. Once we arrived by the river, Ms. Loan’s sister, Ms. Phuong waited for us there with a big smile, ready to take us in her small boat on our journey. Although we did not ask many questions during our trip, Ms. Phuong demonstrated to be very knowledgeable about the area.
Thirty minutes later, we were in the middle of Cai Rang floating market, where we had our early morning coffee and local noodle soup for breakfast for two for less than USD $ 4 dollars, all served by locals operating their business from a floating boat coffee shop and food stall. All we had to do was to approach their boat, make the order, pay, and enjoy.
We really enjoyed the morning sunrise in the river surrounded by dozens of what looked like floating homes and cargo boats filled with fresh sweet potatoes, durian, pineapples, onions, cassava roots and many other vegetables and fruits transported from inland areas to the Cai Rang floating market, the epicenter of business between the boat transporters (floating businesses) and their customers waiting for them with their trucks ready to unload and load the products early morning and from there on their way to different destinations.

El Mercado flotante de Cai Rang
El mercado flotante de Cai Rang es uno de los lugares que hemos tenido en mente en visitar desde la primera vez que pisamos tierra vietnamita. Ubicado en el Delta del Mekong, en la parte sur del país, este lugar es un destino que debe ser visitado por cada persona que visite este país asiático.
Antes de llegar a Vietnam, habíamos visto hermosos informes, fotos y escuchado a muchos viajeros hablando sobre este famoso destino; literalmente nos habíamos enamorado de lo que Vietnam tenía para ofrecer mucho antes de viajar allí. Con una rica historia antigua y moderna, excelente comida y gente amigable son unas pocas de las muchas cualidades que hace de Vietnam un destino único.
Ubicada a unas tres horas y media en automóvil de la bulliciosa ciudad de Ho Chi Minh, la ciudad de Can Tho es el lugar epicentro para visitar el mercado flotante. Convenientemente ubicado a unos 15 a 30 minutos en bote (dependiendo de la velocidad del bote que tome), la mejor hora para visitar el mercado flotante de Cai Rang es entre las cinco y las cinco y media de la mañana.
Una vez que llegue a Can Tho, tendrá muchas opciones para llegar al mercado flotante. Asegúrese de investigar cada una de ellas con bastante anticipación, ya que hemos leído muchas reseñas de desafortunadamente malas experiencias de muchos visitantes con respecto a sus operadores turísticos. Nuestros espíritus más aventureros nos guiaron a leer las reseñas y confiar en aquellos que tuvieron una buena experiencia con la Sra. Loan, una operadora de barcos turísticos local e independiente. Tuvimos una buena experiencia con ella y, por esa razón, recomendamos sus servicios.
De las diversas combinaciones ofrecidas junto con la visita al mercado flotante (recorridos de 3 hasta 7 horas), elegimos el paquete con una visita a la fábrica de fideos de arroz Sáu Hoài y un recorrido por los canales locales, el cual este ultimo fue una experiencia y una revelación en sí mismo que escribiremos sobre esto en un artículo separado.
Por el recorrido programado de 3 horas, que incluye a alguien que nos recogió temprano en su motocicleta desde nuestro albergue hasta el borde cercano del río Hau (sông Hậu), pagamos 500,000 Dong vietnamitas (alrededor de USD $ 22) por dos personas por un bote solo para nosotros. Una vez que llegamos al río, la hermana de la Sra. Loan, la Sra. Phuong nos esperaba allí con una gran sonrisa, lista para llevarnos en su pequeño navío. Aunque no hicimos muchas preguntas durante nuestro viaje, la Sra. Phuong demostró ser muy conocedora del área.
Treinta minutos después, estábamos en el medio del mercado flotante de Cai Rang, donde tomamos nuestro café mañanero y una sopa de fideos local para el desayuno, todo por menos de USD $ 4 dólares. Lo mas interesante de esta experiencia es que tanto nuestro café como la sopa fueron servidos por locales que operaban sus negocios desde sus botes; algo así como un café y restaurante flotante. Todo lo que teníamos que hacer era acercarnos a su bote, hacer el pedido, pagar y disfrutar.
Durante nuestro paseo, nos encanto mucho el amanecer y la salida del sol en el río rodeado de docenas de lo que parecían casas flotantes y botes de carga llenos de batatas frescas, durian, piñas, cebollas, raíces de yuca y muchas otras verduras y frutas. Todos estos productos son transportados desde las zonas del interior hasta el área flotante del Cai Rang market, el epicentro de los negocios entre los transportistas de embarcaciones (empresas flotantes) y sus clientes que los esperan cada mañana muy temprano con sus camiones listos para descargar y cargar los productos y desde allí en camino a diferentes destinos.
