Traveling in Europe with kids

In the summer of 2016, as it was usual (and still is) to meet with my kids during the summer to spend time with them, the plan was to spend a summer traveling through Italy, visit Paris and continue on through Spain. Our summer travels would take an entire month.

Silvana and Pablo (then 9 and 13 years old) had been living in the city of Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea in West Africa. Our separation in mid-2015 had made me decide to apply for work overseas and I had landed a teaching job in China. We had agreed to meet on the summer of 2016 in Frankfurt Germany and from there begin our summer trip throughout Europe.

The planning had been a bit difficult, but with multiple revisions to the plans and schedules, finally it had all made sense and I had decided on the route, the cities we would stay and the places we would visit and of course our mode of transportation; this last one would be by rental car as it was much more flexible and cheaper than buying a Euro rail pass through all those countries.

I had traveled from the city of Shanghai, China to Frankfurt, Germany and had arrived there one day before my kids had arrived on a direct flight from Malabo. I knew the summer plans would be long and tiring, particularly because I would do all the driving throughout Italy and Spain and the responsibility of having two youngsters itself was no easy task.

My flight had been long with a stop at Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates and then another connection in Rome, Italy to finally arrive at the hotel near the airport in Frankfurt, Germany. Arriving one whole day before they did, had been the best idea ever, as I had been able to fully rest and prepare myself physically and mentally for the next month’s task ahead.

Once Pablo and Silvana had arrived, the plan was to stay in Frankfurt for two more nights before beginning our trip throughout Europe. We had gone visiting the German city during the day, made plans for travels ahead and most of all, I wanted to reconnect with them since I had not seen them for a whole year.

Within the two days, we stayed at the hotel near Frankfurt International Airport we had been able to rest very well. Our next stop would be Milan, Italy.
