Visiting Hong Kong in 2 days

In May 2018 during Labor Day in China, we had a three day weekend and it was the perfect moment to get away from the small town I lived in and change the scenery to visit Hong Kong. We had done plenty of research and heard from many other people of the high cost of pretty much everything in Hong Kong, so a short visit would suffice.

The air tickets from mainland China to Hong Kong have always been quite expensive, particularly during any holiday, so our plan was different. We would fly from Shanghai to the southern city of Shenzhen, right near to the border with Hong Kong. The price traveling to Shenzhen had dramatically cut our costs, so we had a good start.

Our plan was to visit this wonderful city of lights where the real estate is one of the most expensive in the world, therefore hotels were not cheap; we had to cut costs on as much as we could. A very small hotel room where only the bed a closet and the bathroom could fit at a location near downtown Hong Kong had set us back about $ 120 dollars per night.

Right after arriving in the city of Shenzhen, we had taken a cab from the airport to the border with Hong Kong, where we had walked over the bridge and the emigration process had been a breeze. After getting our passports stamped, right in the area, we had purchased an octopus card to board the metro into the center of Hong Kong.

The trip had taken about 40 minutes, but we were both excited to be on our way to a good few days away from the routine. After checking in and storing our backpacks we were on our way to explore Hong Kong.

One of the many good things about Hong Kong was the food; the taste was so much different than the food in Shanghai and we loved it. My girlfriend had been in Hong Kong before, so that had made the trip so much better. Dinner had been great.

The next day we visited the Tian Tan Buddha, located in at the Lantau Island. Getting to the 32-meter statue had taken a bit long, but it had been worth it. Once we had arrived there, the challenge was to walk up the hill in order to reach the statue and enjoy the view it had to offer. The cable cart ride from the bottom of the hill had been short, but the higher we went a wonderful view was revealed.

During our visit to Lantau Island, the heat of the day was pounding hard, so we had to stay hydrated drinking plenty of water, so carrying a 1.5-liter bottle was a must. After finally making it to the top of the hill and observing the Buddha, we could feel the breeze finally rewarding us of our effort. The view had paid off in full.

We had walked around the Island through trails that offered us other good views of the island. Our stay at this place had taken us most of the day and sometime in the afternoon, we were on our way back to the center of Hong Kong.

Once we had arrived in the bustling city, we had treated ourselves to dinner at Fung Shing, a one Michelin Star Dim Sum restaurant in town to later finish our day with a walk around the area which seemed to become alive after dark.

After taking plenty of pictures, enjoying the views, doing some shopping we had checked off Hong Kong as one of our places to visit from our travel list. Our next stop, Macau.

Nuestra siguiente parada seria Macao.
