Teaching in China

I have been living in China for the past four years after being hired as a Spanish teacher in the suburbs of the huge city of Shanghai. Honestly, China had really never crossed my mind as a country I wanted to visit, but the opportunity to take my teaching career to the international level came and did not think twice.

I had been living in Houston, Texas for nine years, which for a good number of them my life seemed to be in idling mode. Throughout the years, I had met many people that had been working as an international teacher and I just wondered how life would be working as a teacher of Spanish in some foreign country. My desire to leave the county were held by my responsibilities as a father to stay close to my children and I tried for many years to fulfill such a role the best I could.

The opportunity to seek a teaching position abroad came to me in the year 2015, when my children were on their way to live in Africa with their mother. After learning they would leave the country for an undetermined time I knew there was nothing for me to do in Houston; I had good friends and a stable job, but there was nothing that could fill the hole it would create the departure of Pablo and Silvana.

The plans seemed to work perfectly. My children were scheduled to leave at the end of the month of June 2015 to their new life in Africa and I had applied and completed my profile at www.teachaway.com and other sites. I felt then I had nothing to lose if I applied online, I really did not know Spanish would be a subject that would be of interest in the outside world.

To my surprise, within a couple of weeks, I had received e-mails from a few schools that were looking for a Spanish teacher for the following school year. After asking questions, doing numbers, and looking at the pros and cons of moving to those countries, the best option was to a school located in China.

CHINA! It had never crossed my mind that in China there would be interest to learn my native language. I was in shock, but it then seemed like a real possibility and in my mind, I could only imagine how it would be to teach in that far away land. After a couple of interviews and a bit of persistence, I had received an official offer to teach Spanish in China.

After doing some research on the school I had accepted the job, the doubts of whether this was a real place or a scam had inundated my mind. I had stumbled on www.ISR.com as a reliable source of information about the school. My mind was set. I had given my letter of resignation at my stable teaching job of 7 years in Houston for the unknown and I couldn’t back up.

After selling my belongings, buying a one-way ticket to Shanghai, China (because it was the cheapest option) for a moment I felt homeless. I had managed to leave the place I was renting two weeks prior to my departure and crashed at a friend’s home while spending the summer with my children who would leave the country one day before me.

The day had arrived and I had taken my kids to the airport. It had been a difficult goodbye, but I had to keep a positive mind that all that was occurring in my life was for the better of everyone. The next day had come by and it was my turn to fly to a completely unknown country and after flying to Moscow then to Singapore and finally to my destination, 35 hours later I had arrived in China.

As a seasoned traveler, I think the best part was that I really had no expectations as to what my job or even my life in China would be. I had arrived in this massive country and my goal was to make the best of the whole experience; I was ready to get used to living in a place way out of my comfort zone. After all, I would be the visitor and it would be me who had to adapt to the new culture, language, and anything in my way. I was ready for the new experience.
