For the past three years living in China, I have been lucky to live nearby the ancient town of Qiandeng. Only a short ride on my electric scooter, this magnificent little water town has been the highlight of my weekends when I have felt like staying close to home. Visiting this unique place is not only different or ancient, but as well is a place that you can stroll through its passages and go back in time.

About 15 kilometers from the nearest biggest city, Kunshan in the Jiangsu province, the ancient town of Qiandeng never ceases to impress me with its serenity, rich history and most of all a taste of what must have been to live in it during the Qing Dynasty or perhaps more than 2,000 years ago when it was constructed.

During the various occasions I have visited Qiandeng, the feeling of walking on its ancient stone passages observing the still standing architecture is a great way to spend a couple of hours strolling around the town. I have had the opportunity to visit Qiandeng during the winter and I have to say that it is best appreciated during that time of year, as there aren’t many visitors and as many of the shops are closed, the visitor can better appreciate the place.

During the summer, the shops are open to the delight of the many visitors that flock to Qiandeng as it is free to enter, unlike other ancient or water towns in China. If you visit this ancient town during the high season or summer, after crossing the main bridge from the parking lot, you will immediately get struck by the unmistakeable smell of stinky tofu coming from the various stores selling it and many people sitting around eating it. If you do not mind the smell of stinky tofu, then you might discover some hidden treasures in the shops nearby. I personally walk through that area as quick as possible and once the smell of has passed, then I begin to enjoy my visit.

Walking through Qiandeng you will not only be able to appreciate the ancient construction, tea shops and places to eat, but if you are curious enough,  you might encounter and start a conversation with people who live there.

I have to say that the main reason I have returned to this town has been because on one of my visits there about two years ago, while wondering trough the alleys adjacent to the stone paths, I noticed a old lady looking at me, while talking to her friend. I couldn’t stop noticing her curiosity of my presence there and decided to talk to her and her friend. I learned that they had been living in Qiandeng for many years and even though their children lived in Shanghai, they preferred to live in this ancient town.

It was a pleasant time talking to both of these ladies, which I failed to take note of their names and forgot them, but was able to take a picture with them and learn a little more about the Ancient town from them. I returned to Qiandeng months later and was able to see them again, sitting outside of their homes enjoying a conversation while warming up under the sun. Since then, I have returned several times to Qiandeng with the hopes of find them again, but their doors are closed with a big lock on them.

I returned to Quiandeng a few weeks ago and as the days are now warmer with the beginning of the summer, many restaurants by the river are open for tourist to enjoy. I will definitely return to Qiandeng in the coming months while living in the area and would recommend anyone to pay a visit to this town of so much history.
