The little riverside eatery at Jing’An District

Sometime last year, I had the pleasure to visit one of the legendary and perhaps little known to most restaurants in Shanghai, The little riverside eatery located on 31 Xisuzhou Road, in Jing’an District. The small typical “Shanghainese” (as commonly referred to) food restaurant with only 3 tables and some rustic chairs was then the perfect cozy place to enjoy a good homemade meal Shanghai style.

The little riverside eatery was hosted by a local Shanghai couple, where she would do cooking, while he would take the orders, serve the meals, clean and entertain the customers while lighting up a cigarette. The small place was also their home, as above the small restaurant was a small bedroom accessible by a handmade ladder on the side of the establishment. After descending a few steps into the small restaurant, a variety of drinks, liquor and beer on a shelf, along with a variety of Chinese calendars would make anyone go back in time to the old Shanghai while enjoying a meal.

To my amazement, about 2 months ago, I noticed the place that in my opinion served the tastiest egg tomato soup and a superb crispy fried peppery pork had closed its doors forever. The obvious sign was that as many homes in the neighborhood, the green plate number of the home had been torn out of the outer wall; and now a message displays announcing that the establishment no longer in service when searching for it on the delivery apps.

It was evident that this would happen at some point, as the Jing’an District is currently going through huge changes, where entire blocks of old homes are being demolished to most likely build apartments and office buildings. Luckily, I had the opportunity to visit the little eatery once more early this year before it closed forever. Without a doubt, the Little Riverside Eatery will be a place missed by many.

El año pasado tuve el placer de visitar uno de los restaurantes legendarios y quizás poco conocidos para la mayoría en Shanghai, el pequeño comedero al costado del río en la calle Xizuzhou numero 31, en el distrito de Jing’An. El pequeño restaurante típico “Shanhainese” (como se le suele llamar) con solo 3 mesas y algunas sillas rústicas era el lugar perfecto y acogedor para disfrutar de una buena comida casera al estilo Shanghai.

El pequeño restaurante junto al río lo operaba una pareja local de Shanghái, donde ella cocinaba, mientras él tomaba las órdenes, servia, limpiaba y entretenía a los clientes mientras encendia y disfrutaba un el placer de un cigarrillo. El pequeño lugar también era su hogar. Arriba el pequeño restaurante habia un pequeño dormitorio accesible por una escalera artesanal en una esquina del establecimiento. Después de descender unos escalones hacia el pequeño restaurante, una variedad de bebidas, licor y cerveza en un estante, junto con una variedad de calendarios chinos hacian posible retroceder en el tiempo al antiguo Shanghai.

Para mi asombro, hace aproximadamente 2 meses, noté que lugar que, en mi opinión, servía la sopa de tomate con huevo más sabrosa y un excelente crujiente cerdo frito colmado de pimienta había cerrado sus puertas para siempre. La señal obvia era que, como muchas casas en el vecindario, el número de la placa verde de la casa había sido arrancado de la pared exterior; tambien, ahora aparece un mensaje que anuncia que el establecimiento ya no está en servicio cuando uno lo busca en las aplicaciones de entrega de comida.

Era evidente que esto sucedería en algún momento, ya que el distrito de Jing’An actualmente está pasando por grandes cambios, donde se están demoliendo bloques enteros de casas antiguas para construir edificios y rascacielos. Afortunadamente, tuve la oportunidad de visitar una vez más el pequeño restaurante este año antes de que cerrara para siempre. Sera un lugar que sin duda muchos extrañaremos.
